I know an interpreter who is a very motivated, but not exceptionally skilled interpreter. If you're reading this months Views - I recommend that you read Clay Nettles first page article. There are a number of "interesting" statements made in that piece - but the one I'd like to speak to today is the assumed need for 1.5 Million dollars of "ready cash" in order to be able to "invest funds in rapidly-emerging opportunity or need"... How does an interpreter with (comparatively) little world experience handle an assignment where the client has either minimal language skills, or mental incapacitation that prevents clear understanding during communication?
