Profile Information

How did you first learn Sign Language?
Seven years ago ... I felt like God literally "dropped me" into the Deaf community ... It's the most rewarding thing that ever happened to me! I realized communicating with the Deaf was my passion, so I went through/graduated from an ITP at North Harris College.

There isn't a place to indicate comments re mentoring. One of my best friends (and also my mentor), a very good Deaf friend, and I started TERP Group 3-1/2 years ago. The thought at the time was that I could get MY skills up to pass certification, and there was some WIN-WIN stuff going on between all 3 of us! Within 2 weeks Deaf were wanting to come, then the terps wanted to come, then we had to move to a larger place to meet!!! The group still continues on to this day ... people come from all over the Houston area every Monday night to attend and work on different skill sets...for free. We have sought to unite the broader interpreting community so we can hone in on our skills, all the while the more skilled interpreters are able to mentor us. The point is, anyone can do it if they are committed. If you don't have a mentor, you should! This group here sounds like it will be a great opportunity for you to find one!

For those who are interested, please feel free to also join our group and see how this program works and possibly can be implemented in your area of the world! It only takes 2 like-minded people (preferably 3 ... one of them Deaf!)
