Good morning Michelle,

I agree that exposure to the feild is very imortant and a good way to get that is through the deaf community as well as stable work in variouse settings of interpreting. I will have to say that putting off the NIC is really not the best decision in your quest. Part of your journey will not only require exposure but also a clear knowledge of how to work in real world situations and by studying and preaparing to take thi NIC you will obtain just that. You will recieve a base for which you can fully be aware of how to work within the proper dynamics of The Code of Professional Conduct. Should you pass the test and become certified....well now you have what it takes to obtain stable work as a qualified interpreter. This is the time when you truly begin to become exposed to the work that will bring you to a level that I can only hope will meet your level of satisfaction.

I know this sounds a bit crazy and a bit backwards however what a great deal of consumers out there are looking for someone who is aware of the rules and how to follow them. You can be a great signer all daty long and never receive respect for the lack of professonalism or have a client that is a bit more patien with your mistakes because you are a person who knows how to be a pro and respect the rules.

I would love to sit and chat with you more if you woud like..would you like to talk sometime? If not I hope this helps out a bit.

Good luck,
Frank Alatorre jr.
